AI search results are fundamentally reshaping the customer discovery landscape. SEO practices will be significantly less effective in 2026.
Why?
That’s because over a third of searchers are already using ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and other similar tools to compare and contrast search results.
Your brand cannot afford to be absent from these answer summaries. To solve this challenge, we need to expand our traditional content frameworks into a wider Generative Engine Optimization (EDO/GEO) strategy.
That is why some companies hire AEO/GEO Agencies to handle this work, while others build the skills in-house.
AI answer tools have an entirely different algorithm for selecting resources than traditional search engines.
Answer models perform a “query fan out”, generating multiple related questions to support the original prompt from the user.
The model then parses relevant text excerpts from the most relevant sources, validating facts in cross-referenced documents before delivering a consolidated answer with on-demand links to each supporting source.
Your brand needs to be one of these highly fact-checked sources for any niche or industry segment that your business operates in.
The ultimate goal should always be to improve your Share of Model (SoM) across the key large language models (LLMs) that power these searches.
If your website is the only one mentioning that you are an authoritative player in a segment, chances are the model will not select you – as there is no validation from other sites
Articles, blog posts, and whitepapers all have the same issue: they bury punchlines at the very bottom, or in the end notes. AI struggles to pull out key bullet points or statistics from a long chunk of text.
What you need to do to fix this is change your content template so that all answerable questions are addressed within the first 200-300 words of whatever the page is.
If a subheading is phrasing a question, then the first sentence should always be the immediate answer.
Securing citations within AI search results demands a specific structural and informational framework.
The table below indicates some of the common on-page content elements that we should modify for better compatibility with large language models.
| Content Asset | Traditional SEO Approach | AI Citation Optimization (GEO) |
| Introductory Paragraphs | Establish context, tell stories, and build up to the main topic gradually. | State the definitive answer to the core user question in the very first sentence. |
| Heading Structure | Use creative, catchy titles to capture human curiosity. | Use ultra-simple, direct questions that replicate precise search queries. |
| Data Presentation | Write out findings in paragraph form to increase overall page word count. | Group data points into clean, structured tables and clear bulleted lists. |
| Author Bios | Short blurb at the bottom of the page mentioning the writer’s title. | Full dedicated author pages with links to external publications and patents. |
Generative AI models behave differently based on the type of search query that a buyer is initiating.
Below, we’ve noted how search engines react differently to category, evaluation, and how-to prompts, and how we should tailor our content creation to these differences.
| Query Intent Type | AI Behavior & Citations | Our Content Strategy |
| Category Queries
(e.g., “best B2B marketing tools”) |
Mentions surface in roughly 64% of overviews. Models name clear examples. | Build strong off-site reviews and clean product schema. |
| Evaluation Queries
(e.g., “which tool has better CRM sync”) |
Lean heavily toward neutral publishers and comparison sites. | Pitch comparison data to third-party publishers and review sites. |
| How-To Queries
(e.g., “how to set up schema markup”) |
Favor videos, discussion forums, and detailed explainer guides. | Embed step-by-step videos and clear, numbered textual lists. |
LLMs build a digital entity graph to represent businesses, and any irregularity can prevent a brand from being cited. We need to make it easy for models to correctly identify who we are, and what we offer.
External mentions in the search results matter, period.
When building a resource, many AIs will be going directly to third-party websites to answer subtle or transactional queries.
Google AI Overviews, for example, regularly direct to Reddit forums, review sites (G2/Capterra), and journals for more nuanced questions.
You want to be sure that you have a “co-citation footprint” across the ecosystem. Pitch expert quotes to trade pubs and publish your own commentary or reviews on relevant market sites.
If credible websites mention your brand along with certain keywords, those will hold weight with any AI compiling a resource.
Exclusive data is an extremely prized commodity, because it is not available elsewhere on the Internet.
Search engines, mostly those that are AI-based, will favor unique data wherever it can – so we need to release something no other publication has.
Publish initial party research, case studies, or findings from inside research that you have carried out.
Even a tiny piece of information can be used by crawlers and journalists to develop an entirely different research piece.
Optimization for AI-powered search engines has a slightly different focus than traditional search.
The table below maps out some of the common optimization pillars and technical requirements that we’ll need to measure and monitor on a regular basis.
| Optimization Pillar | Key Metrics to Track | Strategic Action Items |
| Model Visibility | Share of Model (SoM), Share of Voice inside summaries, referral traffic. | Audit 30 high-value customer prompts monthly across major AI platforms. |
| Technical Crawlability | Crawler error rates, server response times, script blockages. | Verify that your robots.txt file explicitly permits GPTBot and Google-Extended. |
| Information Authority | Indexation rate of schema markup, third-party citation volume. | Deploy standardized JSON-LD schema across all product and service pages. |
If we cannot measure it, we cannot optimize for it. Traditional rank trackers only tell us about the standard search results – not how our brand fares within any AI summaries.
To begin, we need to create a list of 20-30 long-tail prompts that reflect the interests of our target buyers.
We should be running manual tests of these prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, etc. on a monthly basis.
We’ll want to note if and how our brand is mentioned, whether our domain is cited, and how competitors are capitalizing on certain queries.
Using SERP analysis tools or Chrome extensions, we can track our own green highlight mentions over time.
Our content cannot appear in any AI search results if the underlying models are unable to read it. Technical compatibility should always be a primary concern for any Generative SEO strategy.
We’ll want to make sure that our robots.txt file is not blocking any critical crawlers, such as GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended.
Avoid using unnecessary JavaScript, PDFs with complex layouts, or tabs with delayed content loading. Keep your key answers contained within easily extractable HTML code.
We don’t need to make a complete overhaul of our website in order to optimize for AI searches.
Let’s take a look instead at our top 10 most valuable organic search landing pages in Search Console, and analyze whether they’re declining in value across a given query breakdown that is summarised by AI.
Visit these pages and get as much information as you can to format the content so short paragraphs are used on the web, direct answers go up front, and check that your schema markup has been correctly installed.
Yet, by continuously optimizing Generative SEO in this way, our brands will stay ahead of the ever-changing digital pack.
