Instead, you get pages filled with repetitive articles, SEO-heavy listicles, sponsored content, half-relevant Reddit threads, and websites that seem designed more for algorithms than actual readers.

The problem isn’t necessarily that search engines have become worse at searching. The internet itself has changed. But the main question now is, why search results are getting worse? 

The sheer volume of content being published every day is enormous. Again, much of it exists mainly to capture clicks, rank highly in search results through white label link building, or generate ad revenue.

That’s why finding genuinely useful, trustworthy information now often takes far more filtering than it did just a few years ago.

While there was less content available in the past, there was also less competition. Today, there’s far more content, which means more competition for attention. 

That’s why some users may perceive results as less relevant. At the same time, all content creators are trying to put up their unique angles. As a result, the search engine takes time to display the most useful one. 

More Ads And Business Goals Get In The Way

Another thing that annoys people with search today is how most websites are set up.

It’s not always about giving you the answer straight away anymore. Many pages are designed to keep you there. 

To clarify, they have preinstalled features like longer scrolls, more ads, and extra clicks. They are sometimes even pushing you toward buying something.

You’ve probably run into this. You look up a simple recipe… and before you get to the ingredients, there’s a whole life story. Not always bad. But it’s just not what you came for.

Again, it’s the same with product searches. You click on a “best” list, but everything feels… sponsored, or at least not fully objective. 

As a result, it’s hard to tell what’s actually been tested and what’s just there for links.

Even basic questions can feel like a task. To clarify, pop-ups appear, and videos start playing on their own. 

What I feel is that the worst points get repeated in different ways. As a result, you scroll more than you read.

After a while, you start feeling that the search just isn’t as useful as before. But it’s not only the search engine. It’s also the kind of content that’s become normal online. For instance, Google rejects all content with a silo structure

Our Expectations Have Changed Dramatically

Did you know there is a unique reason why search results are getting worse? Today, we expect too much from search engines. 

In other words, we accept nothing less than expert data. Besides, we want only authentic, niche-down responses. In short, we are searching for the human touch in the screening that the search engine does. 

What’s worse, just typing 2 to 3 words doesn’t yield results today. Most importantly, you have to offer clear words that make sense. Otherwise, you cannot expect good search results. 

To make that happen, Google now makes it easy to search in your regional language. Honestly, you do not need to add any new filter. 

Just type and get results in your preferred language. Again, that’s why entering a proper search query is so important. 

Many Users Don’t Rely On Search Engines Anymore

Due to issues with relevance, people have started relying on other ways to find content online.

Some people type “Reddit” or other website names together with their search query to find more human, non-sponsored content. Others switch to YouTube, TikTok, and other platforms to get more relevant content.

Some people even tweak their settings altogether. When searching becomes difficult, people switch devices, platforms, and setups, sometimes using a VPN for Apple TV to find shows or apps they couldn’t easily find elsewhere.

None of this improves the search itself. Instead, users turn to alternatives or other platforms in hopes of getting better results.

Search Is Not Broken, But It’s Not Simple Either

Why search results are getting worse? Are search engines working differently, and are we not aware of it? 

While there are some new search rules, the platform and how it works still remain the same. In fact, Google marks which content has better search engine positioning now to search for sources that deliver more utility content! 

The main problem is that there is too much information. However, when you search, you expect the best results to appear within seconds. That’s where you can observe something really interesting. 

The search outcomes today in 2026 have become more objective and purpose-driven. That’s why we nowadays depend on Google for almost everything. 

Around 10 years ago, there was much less content. Again, there were fewer monetized pages creating content on the same topic. 

But the competition is immense today. As a result, most of the content doesn’t deliver value. For example, some make visually effect but shallow content using gamma ai. Therefore, search engines have to filter them before showing you the results. 

Getting Better Results

Now you can easily improve your search results. After all, you know why search results are getting worse. Most importantly, you now know why you don’t get the search results you expect! 

So what are the main tricks that stand out? To narrow down your search results, specify the year. If I want the latest outcomes, I must insert the year “2026” followed by the search query, separated by a comma (,). 

But now you can also filter out the search intent. Just type the content types, separated by commas. For example: “Is a protein shake good for my body, review, 2026. 

Or, “How To Easily Make An Omelet, beginner.” In the same way, you can filter out discussions, debates, and ideas. All you need to do is feed Google the right search intent. 

But you can still not get what you were searching for. One possible cause is that the search is broken. Today, there are millions of pieces of content available against a generic search query. That is why you need to be specific.
