Can people see when you view their profile on Instagram?

Of course, we all visit people’s profiles for whatever reasons. But it is worrying if Instagram actually notifies users about it.

However, thanks to Instagram’s evolving nature and fake promises made all over the internet by third-party sites, claims of finding out who has been visiting your Instagram profile are circulating everywhere. And it’s honestly annoying.

So, I thought it’s best to break down these myths and answer the query for real.

Stay tuned.

The Short Answer: Can People See When You View Their Instagram Profile?

The Short Answer Can People See When You View Their Instagram Profile

Nope, people cannot view who saw their profile on Instagram.

The popular social media platform doesn’t show who all came to check out your profile. And this is true for all accounts, irrespective of whether you have a creator, personal, or business account.

Moreover, if anyone checks your Instagram profile and goes through your content, then you won’t get any notifications from the platform.

This information is kept private – and as a result, profile visits on Instagram stay entirely hidden.

Instagram’s Official Stance:

Instagram has already clearly stated how profile views continue to be private and are not shared with anyone.

Even with Instagram’s latest 2026 updates, there’s no feature that shows who has been visiting your profile.

Also, for the creator and business accounts, Instagram only allows users to access the overall numbers for profile visits via Insights, but keeps usernames hidden.

What Instagram Can And Cannot Show?

Frankly, as an Instagram marketing professional for eight years, I can tell you that is literally where most users get confused.

While you cannot find out who is checking out your Instagram profile, the social media platform does reveal certain user interactions.

On that note, I have broken down the list activity-wise in a table to offer more clarity on the subject matter.

ActivityCan They See It?
Viewing their profileNo
Viewing their postsNo
Viewing their ReelsNo
Searching for their accountNo
Viewing old photosNo
Viewing StoriesYes
Liking a postYes
Commenting on a postYes
Following themYes
Sending a messageYes
Joining their Live sessionYes

The difference is simple. Also, Instagram hides passive activity but shows direct engagement.

Can You See How Many Times Someone Viewed Your Instagram Profile?

Can You See How Many Times Someone Viewed Your Instagram Profile

No.

Instagram does not provide profile visit counts to users. Whether you visit a profile once or twenty times, the account owner won’t know.

This is one of the biggest myths surrounding Instagram privacy.

Some people believe frequent visits trigger notifications or appear in analytics.

And that is perhaps one of the most common Instagram privacy myths I have encountered over the years.

At the cost of repeating myself, you cannot find out how many times someone has viewed your profile – someone can view your profile a hundred times, and you wouldn’t know.

Can Anyone See If I Search For Them On Instagram?

No.

Instagram keeps searches private. As a result, you can safely stalk whoever you want to – Instagram will not notify them about your midnight adventures!

Your searches remain visible only to you.

Also, this privacy extends to:

  • Profile searches.
  • Username searches.
  • Hashtag searches.
  • Location searches.

Searching for someone does not alert them.

What About Instagram Stories?

What About Instagram Stories

Stories are different.

Of course, when you check out someone’s story on Instagram, your username automatically ends up on their viewer’s list.

Moreover, you can also interact with someone’s story – you can hit the ‘heart’ button, send them a private message as a response to the story, and even leave a comment under it.

Frankly, this is one of the few places where the social media platform offers clarity about who is viewing your content.

Also, for story creators, Instagram provides a list of viewers for a limited time. That means people can see:

  • Whether you viewed their Story
  • Your account name
  • The accounts that watched the Story

This is often why people become confused about profile views.

They know Instagram tracks Story viewers, so they assume profile visits are tracked as well. But the reality is they aren’t.

Can People See How Many Times You Viewed Their Story?

Not exactly.

Instagram shows that you viewed the Story. But it does not tell the creator how many times you watched it.

So if you replay a Story multiple times, Instagram generally records you as a viewer rather than displaying repeat views.

The important detail is that the creator knows you viewed it. They don’t receive detailed viewing statistics for individual users.

Can Anyone See If I View Their Instagram Reels?

Can Anyone See If I View Their Instagram Reels

Nope.

There’s no way someone will find out whether you have seen their latest reel or not.

And you can easily find out the number of views from the displayed data, but when you click on it, Instagram won’t show you the viewers.

Moreover, with a Creator account, you can access your account’s overall interaction metrics. This primarily includes:

  • Views
  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Shares

But they cannot see every individual account that watched a Reel. So watching a Reel remains private unless you interact with it.

Can Anyone See If I View Their Posts?

Can Anyone See If I View Their Posts

No.

Unfortunately, you cannot find out who looked at your videos or photos in the main feed.

But the good part about this is you can scroll through your former boyfriend’s account, going through all his posts without worrying about him finding out.

Just don’t accidentally ‘like’ anything – the moment you engage in some way with the content, Instagram will notify the user. So, be careful about that one.

And by interaction, I mean,

  • Like a post
  • Comment on a post
  • Share the post
  • Save the post

Those actions create visible engagement. Simply viewing the content does not.

What Happens If You Watch An Instagram Live Video?

What Happens If You Watch An Instagram Live Video

Live videos work differently.

Whenever you join an Instagram Live, Instagram will notify the host that you have joined. And while the broadcast is going on, your username will appear on the host’s screen.

So, if privacy is your goal, remember that Live sessions are not anonymous. Joining a Live event can reveal your presence.

Why Instagram Keeps Profile Views Private?

There are practical reasons behind the decision.

Many users browse Instagram casually. They explore profiles, discover new creators, research brands, and reconnect with old friends.

If every profile visit generated a notification, users might become less willing to explore.

Without privacy on Instagram, there would be no comfort – we use the app freely because we know our privacy is under protection.

You don’t worry about someone tracking your digital footprints all over Instagram – it would only impact the user-friendliness of the app. Still have questions? Join our forum today for relevant discussions on search and social.
